The Sumsel-8 Mine Mouth Steam Power Plant (2x660 MW) has reached Commercial Operation Date (COD) status. The COD date is set to be effective from October 7, 2023 by PLN.

MT Sumsel-8 Steam Power Plant (PLTU), which is part of the 35,000 MW Power Plant Development Program, is located in Tanjung Lalang Village, Tanjung Agung District, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra Province.

Also known as Tanjung Lalang Steam Power Plant, this plant was built by PT Huadian Bukit Asam Power (HBAP), which is a strategic collaboration between PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) and China Huadian Hongkong Company Ltd (CHDHK).

According to Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Jisman Hutajulu, MT Sumsel-8 Steam Power Plant will make Sumatra's electricity more reliable.

"As the demand for power in Sumatra increases, MT Sumsel-8 Steam Power Plant plays an important role in supplying that need," said Jisman.

Meanwhile, President Director of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Arsal Ismail hopes that the Tanjung Lalang Steam Power Plant will bring benefits to both national energy security and community welfare.

"We hope that the Tanjung Lalang Steam Power Plant would help PLN meet electricity needs in Sumatra region, while also creating a multiplier effect for economic growth and therefore contributing to development," said Arsal.

According to Arsal, the Tanjung Lalang Steam Power Plant employs super critical technology that is both efficient and environmentally friendly.

"The Tanjung Lalang Steam Power Plant also applies Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) technology to reduce exhaust gas emissions. This FGD technology can reduce sulfur dioxide from coal-fired power plants’ exhaust gas emissions," Arsal stated.

MT Sumsel-8 Steam Power Plant supplies electricity to PLN for public purposes in the Sumatran Electricity System and requires up to 5.4 million tons of coal per year. The investment value of the MT Sumsel-8 Steam Power Plant project reached USD 1.68 billion.
