Mangrove forests not only absorb carbon emissions, but also help to prevent abrasion and serve as a breeding ground for marine biota.
That is what Andi Sofyan or known as Aan, Chair of the Bina Jaya Lestari Forest Farmers Group (KTH), always tell the people of Sidodadi Village in Lampung. With the support of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) Tarahan Port Unit, he continues to educate and encourage coastal communities to preserve mangrove forests.
"Previously, many were unaware of how important mangroves are, particularly to the ecosystem. Together with Bukit Asam, we provide guidance. We always emphasize to the society that it is not just getting material, but the good deeds we do today will benefit future generations," said Aan.
Aan's efforts result with success. The Sidodadi Village community's awareness of the importance of mangroves is increasing. The local community reaps significant benefits in terms of the environment, social welfare, and economic development. Many Sidodadi Village community are now involved in the mangrove nursery business.
"Mangroves have provided economic benefits to people living along the coast. The seeds can be sold and socially speaking, there has been an increase in solidarity. No one was planting before, but today many of people are," said Aan.
According to him, PTBA Tarahan Port Unit's support went beyond that and also fostering Micro and Small Enterprises in Sidodadi Village by developing Cuku NyiNyi Mangrove Ecotourism Area.
"Not just planting mangroves, Bukit Asam is present among our people, fostering community development, MSEs growth, the creative economy, and providing knowledge. The presence of Bukit Asam among us is really beneficial," he said.
