
Different from the usual mangrove planting programs, the Bukit Asam Mangrove Nexus Initiative views the mangrove ecosystem as a vital connecting node between land, sea, and community. Dedy Saptaria Rosa, PTBA’s Sustainability Division Head, explained, "Mangroves are natural coast guards, home to marine biodiversity, and a tremendous sink for carbon emissions. Our nexus approach ensures that planting is done in a planned and measured manner, taking into account local characteristics so that the ecosystem that the built ecosystem functions optimally."
This initiative not only focuses on ecology, but also on empowering coastal communities. PTBA encourages the formation of community-based mangrove nursery and conservation groups, transforming local residents into environmental stewards as well as green economy actors. "We believe this model will create sustainability between conservation and prosperity, bringing sustainable added value to the surrounding community," added Dedy.
This launch is a real manifestation of PTBA's "noble purpose" which is to contribute to a better future contribute to a better future through energy transformation and sustainable environmental protection.
Wandi Afrizal, SP, M.Si, from the Marine and Fisheries Service of West Sumatra Provincial, expressed his deep appreciation. "We really appreciate this initiative which is an example of real synergy between industry and environmental preservation," he said. Similarly, the Regent of Pesisir Selatan, Hendrajoni, emphasized, "Although the Ombilin Mining Unit mining operations have stopped, Bukit Asam's commitment to the environment and the people of Pesisir Selatan continues. This is clear evidence that sustainability is not just a slogan, but an action that continues to live and have an impact."
With the launch of the Bukit Asam Mangrove Nexus Initiative, PTBA invites all parties—Government, local communities, and strategic partners—to work together to protect natural heritage. The program started in West Sumatra and will be expanded to the company’s other operational areas in South Sumatra and Lampung. Planting mangroves today not only saves the coast, but also fosters hope for generations to come.
