The underwater charm of Pahawang Island in Pesawaran, Lampung, is already well-known both nationally and internationally. Domestic and foreign tourists enjoy the expanse of coral reefs on Pahawang Island surrounded by Nemo Fish.

PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) has contributed to the conservation of coral reefs in the island since 2016. On March 18, 2023, PTBA in collaboration with Lampung Underwater Community (LUC) planted several types of 160 coral reef seedlings including Acropora Pulchra or Formosa, Acropora Subglobra, Acropora Grandis, and Mortipora Turgescens/Emping Coral.

"The beauty of Lampung underwater and coastal scenery is famous to foreign countries. We want to contribute to the preservation of coral reefs in this area," said President Director of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), Arsal Ismail.

The coral reef conservation program uses seeds from last year’s coral reefs planting, in addition to those of purchased from the community.

The planting uses the method of cutting coral reef seedlings according to the media or shelves that have been prepared. The seeds are then planted and tied to avoid being washed away by the waves. The seed racks are then spread out at several underwater points around Pahawang Island.

Coral reef conservation is needed to maintain underwater biodiversity and help absorb carbon dioxide (CO2).

"Not only preserving the environment, coral reef conservation is also beneficial for tourism development that drive the local economy," Arsal explained.

Coral reef conservation is PTBA's commitment to decarbonize and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) in protecting marine ecosystems; in line with its vision of becoming a world-class chemical and energy company that cares about the environment, and in accordance with PTBA's Noble Purpose as a member of the MIND ID mining SOE holding “We explore natural resources for civilization, prosperity, and brighter future”.

Besides conserving coral reefs, PTBA regularly plants mangroves and manages waste on the coast to protect the marine ecosystem.

"PTBA is committed to growing and developing with the community, building harmonious relationships in a sustainable environment, and providing maximum benefits to the community and the environment," said Arsal.
