In the forests rich with coal deposits, Peni Rostiarti began her journey in 2009 as part of an exploration team. Surrounded by all-male crew, she showed no fear in facing the wilderness. When asked to wait in the car, Peni chose instead to step out and experience the challenges of the field firsthand. River mud that tested the limits of her boots and the unavoidable bites of leeches became memorable stories she now recounts with laughter.
For Peni, carrying a five-kilogram coal sample out of the forest was more than just part of the job—it was a statement that women, too, have the strength to overcome challenges in the mining world. Her dedication and perseverance have since earned her the role of AVP of Geology & Drilling at PTBA. “I tried. I wanted to join and learn. And over time, that commitment led to trust,” she shared.
That same spirit lives in Aninda Rizki Dhani Susanto, Assistant Manager of Data Analysis, Measurement & Cartography at PTBA. Her role, often requiring her to carry heavy equipment—such as a Total Station (TS), California Bearing Ratio (CBR) tools, and GPS devices—into hilly and forested mapping locations, hasn’t deterred her. With courage and perseverance, Anin proves that women are capable in roles associated with physical strength.
“In mapping work, we’re often out in the field, carrying heavy equipment to locations like hills and forests. It turns out, we women are just as capable,” she said proudly.
As of December 2024, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) employs 332 women, representing 19.7% of its total workforce. Even more proudly, 91 of these women hold middle to senior management positions. Their presence brings fresh perspectives and adds valuable diversity to the decision-making process at PTBA.
Peni believes that female leadership brings a unique strength – empathy – which allows for a more holistic approach to decision-making. “Women tend to approach decisions with more complexity, considering not only logic but also the heart. This creates a balance between assertiveness and empathy,” she explained.
Peni, Anin, and other modern Kartinis at PTBA are more than just competent professionals in the mining industry—they also embrace the equally important role of being mothers. After completing their responsibilities at work, they have another role that is no less important – as a mother.
“As women, we must manage our time wisely between professional and household responsibilities—setting clear priorities is essential. When I'm at the office, work takes priority. But once the workday ends, I shift my focus to my duties at home,” emphasized Peni regarding the key to her life balance.
However, balancing dual roles is not easy, as experienced by Dzakkiyyah Nur Khairunissa, a Geotechnical Engineer at PTBA. Despite the exhaustion after a full day’s work, she still greets her child with a warm smile. Even through drowsiness, she patiently listens to her child’s stories and takes time to play together.
“My child is only two years old—an age that demands a lot of attention. My child is very active, and I also have to carefully monitor the nutrition. As mothers, we carry a lot on our minds, but at the same time, we must also remain committed to our responsibilities at work," she said.
With limited time, Dzakkiyyah has learned to make the most of every moment. “Sometimes we’re exhausted, but our child still wants to play. There was a time when I asked to rest instead of playing because I was too tired—and my child ended up feeling sad. I regretted it and felt so guilty," she admitted.
Balancing these dual roles requires strong support from both family and the work environment. Dzakkiyyah really feels the benefits of open communication with her husband, co-workers, and superiors.
“For example, when my child is sick and I’m at the office with tasks that can’t be left behind, it’s essential to share responsibilities with my husband. If he’s not swamped with work, he’ll stay with our sick child. Support from both family and the work environment is crucial. It’s also important to maintain open communication with my boss and co-workers, so they can understand and accommodate urgent situations like these," she explained.
Despite the challenges, Dzakkiyyah feels proud to have successfully balanced both roles. As a female miner, she not only contributes to the development of civilization but also helps shape the future of her family. Her message to other women is to never limit yourself. "Don’t be afraid to dream. The key is to be brave, persistent, and having a willingness to develop ourselves. We can definitely achieve our goals," she said enthusiastically.
PTBA's Commitment to Strengthening the Role of Female Workers
The commemoration of Kartini Day on April 21 serves as a key moment for PTBA, as part of the MIND ID Group, to emphasize its commitment to promoting gender equality within the coal mining sector.
Niko Chandra, Corporate Secretary of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA), emphasized that the company continues to strive to expand opportunities for female employees to thrive, excel, and advance in their careers.
"We recognize the important role that female employees play in supporting the achievement of the company’s vision and mission. Through Kartini Day commemoration, PTBA emphasizes its commitment to further enhancing the active role of female workers in our efforts to provide Sustainable Energy for the nation," he said.
Female employees at PTBA have demonstrated exceptional dedication across various fields, contributing to the realization of the company's vision of becoming a world-class energy company that cares about the environment. To achieve gender equality, PTBA strives to create an inclusive work environment, provide equal opportunities without gender discrimination, and build a corporate culture that supports the role of women in the mining sector.
"PTBA upholds the values of inclusion and diversity in human resource management. We strive to provide the best opportunities for Kartini in the mining sector to work and grow together," concluded Niko.
