Ecosystem Conservation & Biodiversity

Biodiversity is one of the concerns for PTBA. This is inseparable from the Company’s line of business in the mining sector, which changes the landscape and potentially harms biodiversity. For this reason, following the Company’s vision that cares about the environment, PTBA makes genuine efforts so that its business operations have a minimal impact on biodiversity. Thus, the diversity of living things that shows the overall variation of genes, species, and ecosystems in the Company’s operational areas, including differences in shape, size, color, texture, to behavior, is maintained. [GRI 103-1, 103-2]

To maintain biodiversity, PTBA has a biodiversity policy that contains targets to be achieved and is updated every year. In addition, as an effort to conserve biodiversity, the Company will not carry out mining in protected forest areas and areas with high biodiversity. [GRI 103-2, 103-3, 304-1]

About locations located or adjacent to areas of high biodiversity, the Company conducts mining by always considering the principles of good mining. Thus, as of December 31, 2021, there are no reports regarding the significant impact of the Company’s operational activities on biodiversity in the area. [GRI 103-3, 304-2] [OJK F.9]

In line with the preservation of biodiversity, PTBA has carried out a mapping of the area and found certain species included in the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and the National Conservation List in the mining site. For this reason, the Company places the area as a conservation area so that the existence of these species is maintained, protected, and not extinct. The list of fauna and flora conservation status in 2021 is presented in the following tables: [GRI 103-3, 304-3, 304-4][OJK F.10]

In particular, in October 2021, PTBA has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Directorate General of Conservation of Natural Resources Ecosystems (KSDAE) the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Upon the signing, both parties agreed to strengthen the function and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Work Areas of the South Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Center and the Berbak and Sembilang National Parks through flora and fauna population monitoring and habitat conservation of migratory birds, support for ecosystem restoration cooperation through mangrove planting activities of 300 hectares on Alannggantang Island SPTN Region II Palembang, and support for community empowerment cooperation through community involvement in mangrove nursery, planting and maintenance activities. [GRI 103-3, 304-3][OJK F.10].

The biodiversity conservation program agreed by the two parties in the Natural Resources Conservation Center of South Sumatra is in the form of collaborative support for ecosystem restoration through planting/ rehabilitation of watersheds covering an area of 6,824 hectares in the Wildlife Sanctuary (SM) in Ogan Komering Ulu Regency, Lahat Regency, and District Muara Enim by actively involving the community. In addition, there was also an agreement to support cooperation for the preservation of flora and fauna, among others, through the conservation of carrion flower (Amorphophallus sp.), pencil orchid (Luisia sp.), sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), and/or other flora and fauna through identification, inventory, and monitoring in the Isau-isau SM and the Gumai Tebing Tinggi Forest Reserve Forest Group, as well as the development of the Sumatran elephant population (Elephas maximus sumatranus) in the Gunung Raya area. [GRI 103-3, 304-3]

Agreements are also made to empower communities by increasing productive economic businesses around conservation areas and cooperation agreements to strengthen institutions by providing infrastructure for managing biodiversity information data and expanding the capacity of human resources around conservation areas, among others, by giving training mentoring.

In addition to realizing areas with high biodiversity as conservation areas, as well as collaborating with the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry as mentioned above, PTBA has also made various efforts to restore mining areas it owns or manages, including through reclamation and revegetation, as described below: [GRI 103-3, 304-3]
