Bukit Asam Mining History
The history of coal mining in Tanjung Enim can be traced back to the year 1919. Then the first open pit coal mine was opened and operated in Air Laya during the Dutch colonialization era .
Underground mining was done between 1923 and 1940's. In 1938, production for commercial purposes was conducted in two locations: the Air Laya mine for bituminous coal, and the Suban mine for semi-anthracite coal.
When demands for nationalization of Dutch companies got stronger, the laborers of Bukit Asam mine struggled along demanding the same status. In 1950 the government agreed to the forming of Perusahaan Negara (state company) Tambang Arang Bukit Asam (PN TABA).
In 1981, PN TABA changed its status to a limited corporation and its name to PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam. In 1990, PTBA was merged with Perum Tambang Batubara and since 1994 has been assigned to manage the coal briquette project.
At present PTBA is the only state-owned company in the coal mining sector and owns two mining sites (Tanjung Enim and Ombilin).
In late 2002, PTBA became a public company and listed its stocks in the Jakarta and Surabaya Stock Exchanges by the code "PTBA".
